ANSI/ASME B30.5

Per ANSI, “ASME B30.5 is one of ASME’s most requested safety standards—widely respected and applied throughout the building and construction industry. It addresses crawler cranes, locomotive cranes, wheel-mounted cranes, and any variations thereof that retain the same fundamental characteristics and are powered by internal combustion engines or electric motors.

The scope of this Safety Standard includes only cranes of the above types that are powered by internal combustion engines or electric motors. Side boom tractors and cranes designed for railway and automobile wreck clearance, digger derricks, cranes manufactured specifically for, or when used for, energized electrical line service, knuckle boom, trolley boom cranes, and cranes having a maximum rated capacity of one ton or less are excluded.”

  •

The most significant change to appear in the newly revised ASME B30.5 (the mobile crane standard) is the addition of requirements for rigger qualifications. Wherever a mobile crane is in use, there must be a qualified rigger (defined as someone who has passed written and practical exams meeting certain criteria).

ASME B30.5 has been updated to include the requirement for a qualified rigger on any jobsite in any industry where a mobile crane is used. Only the employer may designate the rigger(s) as qualified and this designation must be based on evidence of successful completion of a written and practical examination covering 4 key areas.
