Standards for Overhead Crane Inspectors in General Industry
There are typically four rulings that will cover any job:
- Manufacturer’s Instructions (including crane manual & operator’s manual)
- Company Policy
- Industry Standards (such as ANSI/ASME)
- OSHA Regulations
If there is any contradiction, you must always follow the strictest standard.
The following are the main OSHA Regulations and ANSI Standards you need to be familiar with.
Industry Standards
ANSI/ASME B30.2 – ASME’s Standards for Overhead & Gantry Cranes
ANSI/ASME B30.16 – ASME’s Standards for Overhead Underhung & Stationary Hoists
ANSI/ASME B30.17 – ASME’s Standards for Cranes And Monorails (With Underhung Trolley Or Bridge)
ANSI/ASME B30.21 – ASME’s Standards for Lever Hoists
OSHA Regulations
29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC – OSHA’s Regulations for Cranes in Construction (technically a construction standard, but referenced by NCCCO)
