Standards for Mobile Crane Riggers in Construction
There are typically four rulings that will cover any job:
- Manufacturer’s Instructions (including crane manual & operator’s manual)
- Company Policy
- Industry Standards (such as ANSI/ASME)
- OSHA Regulations
If there is any contradiction, you must always follow the strictest standard.
The following are the main OSHA Regulations and ANSI Standards you need to be familiar with.
Industry Standards
ANSI/ASME B30.9 – ASME’s Standards for Slings
ANSI/ASME B30.10 – ASME’s Standards for Hooks
ANSI/ASME B30.20 – ASME’s Standards for Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices
ANSI/ASME B30.26 – ASME’s Standards for Rigging Hardware
OSHA Regulations
29 CFR 1926.251 – OSHA’s Regulations for Rigging Equipment for Material Handling in Construction
