With Articulating Crane Operator being the second most requested NCCCO Certification, Crane Inspection & Certification Bureau (CICB) has added additional Preparatory Training Programs for NCCCO certification to meet the demand and OSHA’s Final Rule.

The versatility of the articulating boom cranes, or knuckle-boom cranes, has made it a popular choice for the construction industry in today’s market. The current regulatory requirements, coupled with increase applications of these cranes in the field, has accelerated the growth in Articulating Crane Operator certification. To address the high demand for preparatory training and certification exams, Crane Inspection & Certification Bureau (CICB) has expanded their offerings of NCCCO Articulating Crane Operator programs.
Articulating cranes, primarily known for material delivery, have gradually been adopted to perform tasks that were previously handled by telescopic boom mobile cranes. “The many tasks that articulating cranes are being used for has led to some confusion as to if the operators are required to be certified under OSHA 1926 Subpart CC” said Jerry Longtin, CICB’s General Manager. OSHA defines construction as “work for construction, alteration, and/or repair, including painting and decorating.” The delivery of construction materials is typically classified as “general industry,” but, if a crane facilitates a construction activity while delivering materials, then that is considered “construction” and Subpart CC rules apply.
Joel Oliva, the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) Director of Operations, referenced that, “Last year CCO Articulating Crane Operator certification became the second most popular CCO certification program (after mobile cranes), reflecting the increased market acceptance of ‘knucklebooms’ and loaders in the U.S. market.”
For 50 years, CICB has followed industry trends and met demand when growth outpaces the supply of qualified operators. This Veteran owned company with its team of Subject Matter Experts have over 600 years of combined dedicated experience in training, operating cranes and material handling/lifting equipment and rigging. They have also been trained, evaluated and certified in Adult Learning Principals as a Trainer by the Bob Pike Institute. “Market growth for articulating crane operators has come, in particular, from the utility, energy, pre-cast concrete, railroad, roofing, and rental industries,” continued Longtin. “In addition to a substantial increase for Articulating Crane Operator Preparatory Training and NCCCO Exams at our training centers, the requests for programs to be held at our client’s locations across the U.S. has tripled.”
Headquartered in Orlando, FL since 1969 with a second training facility in Houston, TX, Crane Inspection & Certification Bureau (CICB) provides customized training for every type of lifting equipment and inspection services worldwide.
CICB’s professionally trained instructors and subject matter experts are not only NCCCO Accredited Practical Examiners, but are NCCCO Certified as Mobile, Overhead & Articulating Crane Operators, Riggers, Signalpersons, Lift Directors and Crane Inspectors. CICB instructors have been awarded the prestigious Top Trainer Award in 2017, 2016, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011 and 2009.
